Extended Suffix Chains

Turkish allows very long suffix chains. The order is crucial:

1. Root

2. Derivational suffixes (passive, causative, reflexive)

3. Negative

4. Tense/aspect

5. Person

6. Question

Each follows vowel harmony with the preceding element.

gel-dir-il-e-me-yecek-ti-m
I was not going to be able to be made to come

come + CAUS(bring) + PASS + ABIL + NEG + FUT.PAST + I

anla-t-tır-ıl-a-bil-iyor-muş-sunuz
you (pl) are apparently being made to be explained

understand + CAUS + CAUS + PASS + ABIL + CONT + EVID + you.pl

Nominal Suffix Stacking

For nouns, the order is:

1. Root

2. Plural

3. Possessive

4. Case

5. Copula

6. Question

Buffer consonants appear between vowels.

ev-ler-imiz-de-ki-ler
the ones in our houses

house + PL + our + LOC + REL + PL

kitap-lar-ın-ız-dan-mış
(it) was apparently from your books

book + PL + your + ABL + EVID

araba-lar-ı-n-ın-ki-ler
the ones of his/her cars

car + PL + his + buffer n + GEN + REL + PL

Relative Suffix -ki

The suffix -ki converts location/possession into 'the one which/who is...':

Pattern: Location/possessor + -ki

Creates adjectives or pronouns.

İstanbul'daki ev
the house in Istanbul

Istanbul + da + ki + house

benimkiler
the ones that are the ones that are mine

benim + ki + ler

dünkü gazete
yesterday's newspaper

dün + kü (special form) + newspaper

Complex Possessive Chains

Multiple possessive relationships can chain together:

Pattern: Noun1 + GEN + Noun2 + POSS + GEN + Noun3 + POSS

Example: Ali's father's car = Ali-nin baba-sı-nın araba-sı

öğretmen-in çocuğ-u-nun kitab-ı
the teacher's child's book

teacher + GEN + child + POSS + GEN + book + POSS

Türkiye-nin başkent-i-nin adı
the name of Turkey's capital

Turkey + GEN + capital + POSS + GEN + name + POSS
